As a HUGE fan of netflix, i suggest the most under-rated film I have seen in a long, long time. check out "lars and the real girl." It was charming as hell - not a "chick flick" at all....let me know what ya think.
Despite the fact that your unsophisticated tastes frowned on my West Wing TV pick, I'll give it another go.Netflix movies you might not have seen? This movie probably jump-started Owen (and Luke) Wilson's career -- will you girls please explain to me why Owen is hot? Do I have to break my nose too? The flick is "subtle." It gets better as you watch it again and again (you'll miss half the jokes the first time). Debby, if you don't like this, I'm through with you :)
I have seen bottle rocket - and LOVED it! I think I first saw it because you recommended it to Roy - One word - "CawCaw". both of the brothers are hot in this movie. However, not as cute in some of the stupider things they have been in more recently.
owen wilson is not hot - House (don't know real name) on the other hand......short bus - opening scene - holy gamoli - watch in private the band's visit - egyptian police band gets stranded in israel, very funny and sexy charlie wilson's war- phillip seymor hoffman (my favorite) and tom hanks trying to get russia out of afghanistan. smart and very well done the secretary - dark and sexy smart little miss sunshine
Madmen, Madmen, Madmen. I love this series.!!!Sunday nights at 10 on amc channel(?)
Mad Men, huh?I think I've heard this a couple times on mobspin now. Apparently I've been missing out on something. Thanks meg, I'm adding this to my queue too.
The Secretary?Wow, great call Aura! Debby, you seen that? Maggie has been in my dreams ever since I saw it. (why did the mention of that movie make me remember Swimming with Sharks?)
maggie has been in everybody's dreams since they watched that movie...if you liked the secretary, you may really enjoy shortbus. it is similar in theme in that it hits on people's inner struggles to interact and how they can and can't relate to eachother in part because of their sexual realities. that said it is not really about sex even though it is sort of all about weird sexy sex (if that makes any sense at all), but rather what it means to connect and not be able to connect with people. i just read what i wrote and it is sort of a bad review...just put it on your netflix and let me know what you think. i'd be curious.
If you liked Homicide, you should love "The Wire." The Chron's TV Critic (Goodman) has it on his "best of" lists. It has a lot of the same look/feel (and involves some of the same staff/actors).Most TV shows (like Homicide) work as serial short stories; the Wire is a TV novel, so it starts slow and builds up addictive interest. And again, if you liked Homicide, you might like Barry Levinson movies, such as "Diner," "Avalon," and "Tin Men." He also directed "Rain Man," "Wag the Dog," and "Man of the Year." (Which seem as though directed by someone entirely different.)
you are right on with "the wire" recommendation. This is my all time fave! I have watched every episode at least 3 times (all 5 seasons). Thanks for the other recommends, I will check them out
Cool- I suspect you'll like most of Levinson's work. He gets great performances out of his actors, uses tight pacing, and tells great stories. The more I watch movies the more I appreciate good directors. And how did I notice you liked Homicide, but missed that you loved the Wire?
I just got my netflix "Lars and the real girl" movie. It was delivered to my work. Female reaction: "Good movie, enjoy" Male reaction: "Lars and who? [laughs]. You rented a chick flick...? [more laughs]" This better be worth it :)
I finally watched Lars over the weekend. I'm not sure if I'd go out of my way to recommend it, but it certainly was "different."Different in a good way.
we just watched this and I did really enjoy it. I found myself crying in one part. Luckily it was the part with an interaction of two actual humans. However, I did get a bit emotional in some of the scenes with the doll, which was a bit disturbing. Thanks for the recommend!
We saw this great documentary series at the SF International Film Festival a couple of years ago. It's available on Netflix and I would highly recommend it. It's called "The Century of the Self." It was fascinating!
I found it on netflix, but they don't have it available... I had to use the "save" feature. It looks excellent, so I will keep an eye out for it if I rent from somewhere else... tx
