TV Shows for 5 year olds?

The girls seemed to have outgrown the standard sprout/noggin shows such as dragontales, thomas and sagwa.

We then let them watch some of the Disney shows like Witches of Waverly Place, and noticed a distinct new sassy back-talking attitude from them. Not to mention that there is all kinds of boy and kissing talk that we are not too psyched about.

Any suggestions? We can get old episodes on Netflix.

Here are a few that Kyra and Lainey like - we usually record or watch on demand (when available). We almost never watch Disney - the girls loathe princesses (except Pocahantas, b/c "she doesn't really look like a princess").

- Super Why (PBS)
- Animalia
- Word Girl (PBS)
- How It's Made (Discovery)
- Dirty Jobs (Discovery)
- John and Kate Plus 8 (TLC)

A FANTASTIC resource for parents is www.commonsensemedia.com. They classify books, movies, tv shows, and video games by age appropriateness and also review.

I'll be interested to hear about other recommended shows!

For Xmas, our brother in law gave us all the "retro" episodes of Sesame Street and Elec Company. Aside from being an incredibly nostalgic experience for me [I remember some of the episodes] you can recognize the "pyschedelic" roots of Sesame Street.

Also, try Netflix for the "Walking with Dinosaurs" series. I have three girls [3.5-6.5] and all kids love dinosaurs.

Dunno about current TV shows, but if you can find old things on DVD, I remember just *loving* 3-2-1 Contact as a kid. We also get a lot of enjoyment out of the Animusic videos (both Toby and Rafe like them).

There's definitely a big jump between the little kid shows that my kids liked (and I tolerated), e.g. Wonderpets, Backyardigans, Peep, & Curious George, and the shows geared toward young elementary kids that my kids like (and I can't stand), e.g. Pokemon, Barnyard, Drake & Josh, and Nathan's latest discovery, Total Drama Island. Ugh.

They do like the old Looney Tunes cartoons, Tom & Jerry, etc., which are unbelievably violent but somehow in a harmless way.

Good luck!

As it turns out lately, we have been watching less tv anyways, and if we do it ends up being videos. I should try the looney tunes though, I bet they would get a huge kick out of those. It is always fun to see coyote getting blown to pieces!

I also remembered that they like the old Pink Panther cartoons. Again, sometimes violent, but I guess it's off-the-wall enough to be okay. The music is great!
