on my other computer a notice keeps appearing that i need to update my web browser, but when i try it then tells me that i cannot use any of their suggested down/up loads because my computer is too old.
is there a special trick i can do so that i can get updated web browser stuff for my oldie but goodie computer?

Your description of the error really doesn't help us techies figure out the problem. (it's not your fault. error messages are hard to read)
However, try this:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
Download that web browser. You might already have it but, it should download and install the latest "Firefox" on your computer.
Firefox is a superb browser. Maybe that will get you back in business.
