health benefits of soy milk

I have heard a mixed story on the health benefits of soy milk. Supposedly, excess soy is "bad", but I am not sure why. any opinions/websites to look at?

Prevention.com - soy milk search gives you many studies on soy, such as "Soy: Disease fighter" and "Could soy be bad for you brain?" Ruth

I think that one reason some say that excess soy is not good is that there is something similar to estrogen in soy. I imagine a web search on "soy estrogen" would give you some relevant information.

i am a regular soy user. I firmly believe that the benefits of using soy over regular milk are much greater. That said - it is important not to over use soy. If you drink or eat too much of anything your body could develop an allergy to that thing.

It is also important that you use organic soy - because the amount of pesticides and genetically modified soy that is out there could cause some serious damage in the long run. I suppose that goes for anything really - regular milk or soy.

So I did a bit of poking around based on some of the suggestions, and the answer is: noone knows. surprise.

The standard argument for soy is that Asians eat alot of soy. Asians are healthy. Therefore soy must be healthy. Not the soundest logic, but the correlation is interesting

The articles point out that most of the soy products that Asians eat are soy sauce or tofu, not the reconstituted soy burger/fake bacon etc. that are all over the market today.

I guess moderation is the key. Probably shouldn't be feeding the kids 3 glasses of soy milk a day.

Hi Debby,

Not sure if you are still interested in this topic, but if so, there is a new book out titled 'The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health Food'.

The author seems well researched. And I think her main point is that the way soy is processed makes it carcinogenic. It does sound scary and alarming, but still may be worth looking into, esp if the kids are exclusively having soy. Also, I've read that boys who are given a lot of soy have increased levels of estrogen....

Hope this helps.

Thanks Aena, I will bring this to the attention of my sister-in-law, whose 8 year old is a recent vegetarian. I think she ends up eating alot of processed soy products.
