Questions

which laptop?

I'm trying to decide on what laptop to get..there is the usual..Mac vs. PC question...and if a PC, which one is the best. I don't need it for anything fancy...storing music, photos, basic office type stuff, internet, etc...does anyone who have knowledge about this have any advice for someone who doesn't really know a thing about computers?

Here's a discussion from July on the Mac vs. PC question, and my comment about my Sony laptop...

If you do go with a PC, I've been very happy with my Sony laptop. It's taken quite a beating -- used almost every day for several hours for a while now, with no problems at all.

The SZ is no longer made, but the replacement SR model seems very nice, and the price seems reasonable.

An SR with 4GB RAM and 320GB hard drive (these are the max options, which is what I'd get), is less than $1700.

Sony finally has a "fresh start" option so give you a computer without any of the crappy "free" software that takes days to remove. I'd definitely go with that choice, even at $50.

You can check it out here:

It also might be worth stopping by a Sony store to hold/feel one first.. there are stores in the Stanford mall, Valley Fair mall in Santa Clara, and in the Metreon in SF. (I'd still order a customized one by mail, though.)

If you have more questions about the different customization options, just ask...

having both (a PC for work, a Macbook at home) I'd have to say a Mac. It's a lot easier to use, from the software which is really intuitive to the Hardware that works as expected, all the time.

Case in point: connecting to my wireless network at home. My work laptop (PC) takes between 10sec-5min to connect to it, that is if it can even find it (even though I'm standing right next to the access point). The Mac ... 1 sec, all the time. We also had an iMac for a while and same thing, connected consistently, all the time.

Now that particular issue could be the hardware (IBM/Lenovo) or software (Microsoft/Lenovo), dunno. But it's nice when you have hardware (Apple) and software (Apple) from the same vendor, so at the very least you know who to talk to.

I'd recommend walking into an Apple store where you can take a "test drive". Apple lets you play to your hearts' content, because they're confident you'll have a good experience. I don't blame them.

I'd go Mac. Many of my friends and family have converted and are happier for it.

If you go PC don't go with Lenovo :-)

I don't currently have one... but always had good luck with Dell.

I would definitely go Mac. I use a MacBook and have never had a problem with any aspect of it. It is easy to use and perfect for storing music, pictures, videos and using the internet. My last computer, a Dell, had way to many problems in the short period I used it (2 years).
