tax advice

Location: Menlo Park, CA

With this crazy financial year coming to an end, I'm trying to figure out what I can do to minimize my taxes. Anyone have a good, inexpensive advisor you recommend? (I'm not even sure exactly what I should be looking for... tax accountant? financial planner?). Thanks.

We've been quite satisfied with our accountant, Tom Vocker -- I'm sure he'd be happy to sit down with you and chat.. he's been very good about not charging me for occasional meetings (he just charges for doing our taxes).

Vocker Kristofferson & Co
1700 S El Camino Real
San Mateo, CA  94402
(650) 574-5000

Reliable, friendly accountant

Pros:

Tom is very friendly, personable, willing to spend 1-1 time without "starting the clock" for every conversation, affordable

Cons:  gets very busy and sometimes cuts it close at tax time -- had to file and pay this year on the 15th even though we submitted all our stuff well before.

We've used Tom Vocker as our accountant for 8 years. We "can't be bothered" to do our taxes ourselves.

He's reliable and friendly, and has always been willing to give advice and chat about a variety of tax issues. I don't think he's ever charged me for 1-1 conversations, just a reasonable annual rate for tax prep.

I just spoke with Tom today... he has helped clients buy and start retail businesses so would be happy to chat about it--just give him a call and feel free to mention my name.

One last thing: I'm not the type to scour every last detail of our returns, so I can't really vouch for whether he's "amazing" at saving us every last penny. But as far as I know he hasn't made any big mistakes, and has several times pointed out a few things to save us some real money.
