I'd check out www.klwines.com (or visit their store, K&L Wines) as they usually have great recommendations. If you pick something in the $15-20 range from there it'll be good & appropriate as a bbq gift.An alternate if you like going to Trader Joes is to pick up some nice bottles of Belgian Beer. They have these wine-bottle sized bottles of Chimay Premium or Reserve that are yummy & great for BBQs. If you really want wine & want to be somewhat interesting, from any Trader Joes, BevMo or K&L pick up a bottle of something from Argentina, New Zealand, or a Shiraz/Syrah from Australia. Those are some of most popular "emerging" places so they're reasonably priced yet are high quality & have somewhat of a cool factor. Versus something from Napa/Sonoma, France, Chile, even Washington or Central California (Paso Robles)....all of which are popular so there's a higher chance of a wine snob turning their nose at what you're bringing. Hope that helps!
You can't go wrong with Santa Margarita Pinto Grigio (~$18) if you really want to impress. Australian/New Zealand reds for some reason give me headaches. Another new to the market (old to us winos) is a decent bottle of Malbec or Tinta either Spanish or Argentinian ($8 - 20). The Malbec is a heavier cabernet/zinfindel taste where the Tinta is your basic chianti or light merlot. The lower end Tintas ($8 - 10) are ok, but stick to the >$12 on the Malbecs.
For a nice bottle of wine for a BBQ, I would suggest a Tempranillo. A Tempranillo is a red wine and is considered the backbone of great wines of Northern Spain. One Tempranillo I enjoy is from my hometown winery and goes for $25-$30. To give you an idea of the kinds of smells and tastes: dark plum, black cherry, bacon, black pepper, and earth. No one can mistake this wine for any other thus makes it an interesting. standout wine.
I would agree with Bob and go with a Tempranillo. I also like anything from Castoro Cellars, which you can get at TJ's. But Castoro does not make a Tempranillo. But if it's a BBQ, a cold white would be even better. Viognier is a great white that can stand up to any red and a pile of ribs, and its cool and refreshing for the summertime.
I like Belgian beer and that's a great idea. However, If I do that, the bottle of Chimay is not going to make it to the party :)No Napa. Got it. Thanks.
Bob, Laura, thanks for reminding me: Tempranillo!I tried, and liked, this recently. I never would have remembered without you. Great advice guys.
I agree. Thanks for the reminder about Tempranillo. I kept visualizing this bottle with a bullhead silloutte on it....and couldn't think of the name.I had luck with Mano a Mano La Mancha and Conde de Valdemar Rioja Crianza and I put Marques de Caceres Rioja Crianza in my homemade Sangria...
I agree! Viognier is an awesome white wine. My favorite is from Thomas Coyne Winery. Tom's new release is the 2007 Viognier for $18.
fisheye is my new favorite cheap but good wine. about 10 dollars a bottle, sometimes on sale for 9. it has a super cute label, and is good in white or red. i like the merlot.
i forgot, my neighbors and i have wine club once a month. unfortunately i always forget which ones i really like, because, well, i am fairly tipsy when it is all over. i do have a list somewhere that i will look for. bbq is over - i know but maybe for the future.
