Hey Pat:David Park gave me a good recommendation about this a while ago. Go with a Sony Playstation 3. The great thing about PS3 is that it's Blu-Ray player gets automatic firmware updates over the web, unlike a lot of other players. Plus, you can entertain your family and friends by purchasing ROCK BAND 2!
I'd bet that the blu-ray player will work, but not to it's full potential -- read: it's probably going to look just like a regular old dvd.Unless you have an HDTV, it would seem that buying a blue-ray player is pointless.
If it works at all on an analog TV, the Blu-ray will not likely look like anything special. I would get an HDTV before investing $300+ on a DVD player. When you do get a Blu-ray, the only two things I think warrant attention are that Sony is basically the leader of the format so I have a slight preference for their players and that you want to try to get a player that plays CDs and recordable discs (not all do).
I've been shopping for one too. Here's what consumer search thinks: http://www.consumersearch.com/blu-ray-players Looks like pricing seems to be 179 - 199 here on black friday. I have a netflix account so I'm looking at the LG that streams movies from their on-line service
