Shopping for a blu-ray disc player...

Location: Silion Valley

I am looking to buy a blu-ray disc player -- any recommendations? Will it work with an analog TV?

Hey Pat:

David Park gave me a good recommendation about this a while ago. Go with a Sony Playstation 3. The great thing about PS3 is that it's Blu-Ray player gets automatic firmware updates over the web, unlike a lot of other players.

Plus, you can entertain your family and friends by purchasing ROCK BAND 2!

I'd bet that the blu-ray player will work, but not to it's full potential -- read: it's probably going to look just like a regular old dvd.

Unless you have an HDTV, it would seem that buying a blue-ray player is pointless.

If it works at all on an analog TV, the Blu-ray will not likely look like anything special. I would get an HDTV before investing $300+ on a DVD player.

When you do get a Blu-ray, the only two things I think warrant attention are that Sony is basically the leader of the format so I have a slight preference for their players and that you want to try to get a player that plays CDs and recordable discs (not all do).

I've been shopping for one too.
