Though it has some rather mature subject matter, I would highly recommend Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man by Fannie Flag. It is told from the perspective of a very precocious 11 year old girl who grows up to be a capable young woman. It is very, very fun and funny.Fannie Flag also wrote The Whistlestop Cafe (aka Fried Green Tomatoes).
boy or girl? is the child into science fiction/fantasy? I enjoyed Twilight, which I know my 13 year old niece also enjoyed, although it is a bit trashy. For something more quality, you might try watership down
