Put me to sleep

Do mattresses really cost that $#!@ much?

You'd figure that a full grown man would have purchased a "real" mattress by now. However, I really just made my first attempt.

So, imagine my surprise when I walked into the local mattress store. Who would have thought that the price of a mattress needed a comma?!

Where did you buy your mattress? How did you find the best deal? Any pointers I should know about while looking for my new bed?

Debby & I spent quite a bit of time looking for a good mattress.

We finally settled on a near top-of-the-line firm mattress from Simmons.

It included a top layer of tempur-pedic style foam... Here's a link to the line: http://www.simmons.com/products/brands/beautyrest/nxg_02.html

It was pricey (about $2K for a Queen mattress) but it has been awesome, it's hard to sleep on anything else.

One suggestion is to avoid the boxspring--it's usually really expensive and just doesn't seem to add much... we keep ours on a thin board on top of some drawers.

Thanks. I'm still getting over the sticker shock. But, I guess this is how much mattress cost.

I'll go check out the Beautyrest.

My wife and I bought a new Select Comfort bed (http://www.selectcomfort.com/) just before Christmas. Like Roy's reommended bed, this one isn't cheap, but you want a bed that fits your needs, since you'll be lying there for an extended period.

The nice thing about the select comfort is that you can adjust the air bladders on either side of the bed to make it softer or firmer. You get your own sleep number. If you sleep alone, this may not be for you, but if you share, then no one needs to make a compromise on sleep comfort.

Again like Roy's choice, the mattress has a pillow-top, but it is the conventional foam, not the fancy foo foo stuff he and Debbie have.

We skipped the box spring and kept our old one. We placed a couple of sheets of plywood on top to give the air bladders the support they needed.

Thanks Damian. I'll keep this in mind as I look around.

i don't know if this is still relevant but i have a simmons backcare bed. i think i paid close to 3,000 for it, maybe 2,500, can't remember. a good bed is important, there are often sales, but you should spend a good amount of time just lying on them in the store. don't be bullied by the sales people, lie there for a good 1/2 hour and see how you feel.

you want one with the fancy extra coils in the right places. i do not recommend the super pillow top, which is what i got. while you feel like you are in a cloud, which is fun for reading and such, it is a bit too soft for long term sleeping. i thought it was really comfortable, but now wish i had gone a bit firmer. another issue with the pillow tops is that regular sheets to do not fit, because they are soooo damn tall. i had to go out and by all new sheets. i have either sheets that are a size larger or "special" sheets that are a million dollars.

it is time however to buy the good bed, yer not gettin' any younger.
