Questions

Dentistry

Location: Santa Monica, CA

Ok, so now that I'm a freelancer, my healthcare costs are... out of pocket. Two questions. Anyone know a decent dentist on the westside of LA that won't bilk me? (All I need is a cleaning)
&
Does that that "deep cleaning" really make a difference?
Every time they tell me I need it, I feel like I'm being sold the clear coat at an Oldsmobile dealer!

Freddy,
Lee & I go to Culver Dental in Culver City/Mar Vista
(310) 915-9797. Not sure how much they charge for out of pocket, but call. It's a decent place, but not very personalized - just in and out with a hygenist and the Dr. comes in at the end of your appointment to tell you everything is ok. I totally believe in 2 cleanings a year and can totally feel it when I'm in need of one. You should get at least 1 a year in my opinion.

Another dentist to try is Meredith Levin http://www.hppydds.com/. My cousin just recommended her to me because she's open on Saturdays.

Hope this helps!

Thanks ellen. I'll check with the cc office today. I know the cleaning is necessary. When I went in for my last cleaning, they tried to sell me a "deep cleaning"

I'm wondering if that is just a scam or a real need.

oh, I think you're right with the deep cleaning thing. Total scam!

Pros:

Never felt an ounce of pain

Cons:  ok, my wallet felt some pain, but I have no reason to believe more pain here than anywhere else.

He's done a root canal on me and I still like him :) -- no pain at all when doing that by the way.

Truthfully, I've not gone to a ton of dentists (see my other review). So perhaps it's unfair to compare my dentist to others, however, I've been going to this guy for a handful of years now and have always been happy with the service. (very happy)

Deep Cleaning threw me for a loop. In Canada it is the standard cleaning procedure so when I was first offered it here I was confused: I thought I had been getting it all along. It turned out the dentist I was seeing only cleaned above the gum line for regular cleanings and charged extra for below. I fired him.

My new dentist does not stop at the gum line while cleaning. She's great and runs a small practice in Sunnyvale right behind the In 'n Out Burger on El Camino Real. Dr. Jeannie Irvine - 408-732-6773.

Dr. Jeannie is excellent. She runs a small practice, does her own cleanings (no hygienist) and spends much more time with her patients than any other dentist I have been to. I addition to general dentistry she also offers Invisalign (invisible braces) and the latest teeth whitening.
