Healthy lunch box ideas

I am looking for ideas for stuff to put in my kids and my lunch box. The kids have a 4 compartment "bento box" so little items like nuts work well.

Hey Debby - Here are some ideas (many of which, I'm sure, you've thought of too...)

- veggies like cherry tomatoes, frozen peas, baby carrots
- slices of cheese
- beans
- bite sized fruit like blueberries, grapes
- sesame sticks (be careful to avoid brands with yucky fats and preservatives)
- vitamin fortified and low-sugar dry cereals (like Mighty Bites or 'healthy' granola)
- cooked whole grain pasta with a little butter or olive oil and cheese/salt
- come to think of it mac & cheese would work - my kids will eat it room temp
- Stonyfield brand (or other organic) yogurt sticks... although I generally avoid hyper-packaged items, there's nothing grosser than cleaning out yogurt that's spilled in the lunch box
- PB&J (organic PB is important) on a really healthy bread (be careful, many common brands like Orowheat contain high fructose corn syrup)
- tortillas - plain or with cream cheese, peanut butter, butter, etc. rolled in. I think the Whole Foods whole wheat tortillas are really yummy.

Hope there's something useful in here... I also recommend a book called Lunch Lessons. I'll try to post a review with amazon link tomorrow...

Good luck!

thanks Lauren - I just packed lunch for tomorrow with blueberries, mac-n-cheese, beans and pita. Plus I love the tortilla idea - much more appealing than sandwiches.

Thanks Aura, I used your spanikopita idea for myself today, and lots of other good ideas there - I especially like the fried tofu - Drew loves tofu.
