First stick to the American brands since they allow you to close each side (hand) separately. In the European brands first you have to attach both latches and only than you can click. We have the Cosco Alpha Omega Elite and are VERY happy with it.
Happy birthday to Prince Ethan. We have had a number of Britax seats and like them alot. Very well made.
One year already?! Time flies! We bought the Evenflo Triumph convertibles for the twins because they got very good safety ratings from Consumer Reports, but were significantly cheaper than the Britax (which also got good reviews.) They're also well-padded and seem pretty comfortable. The only problem with the Evenflo (potentially a big one) is that it's very very hard to take all the fabric off to wash, which is very unfortunate -- because at the point when you'll need to wash it, the whole seat will likely be covered in vomit! Here's a pretty funny series of posts about it: (Perhaps the newer models have been improved, but this might be reason enough to spend more for the Britax.)
Sorry if this seems a bit off topic: I think your baby is a year too young for the video's subject and it doesn't directly help to answer your question.Nonetheless, I ran across this video (it's long 20 mins). I thought it was interesting, thought of your question, and figured the speaker Steven Levitt (Freakonomics) might be familiar to you. The video is here: Sorry I couldn't help directly, I hope video is at least interesting. Happy Birthday to your baby!
