Family Birthday party in San Fran

My brother is turning 40 and my family wants to do something fun for his big day - not just same old dinner at a local restaurant. He lives in San Fran so we want to keep it pretty local. Also, we have 2 kids - 12 & 10, so something that would be ok for them. Any ideas?

Maybe charter a boat? This sounds like fun: http://www.sftravel.com/boats.html

We just had a karaoke birthday party for my wife at Silver Cloud. It was a blast! Words of wisdom: the more people drink the better they sound... or at least think they sound;)

Are there any places (museums, parks, etc.) where he likes to hang out that you could rent for a private party?

When Emilie and I lived in the East Bay and finished graduate school, we rented out one of my favorite tennis facilities (http://www.oaklandnet.com/parks/facilities/dts.asp) and catered food from one of our favorite restaurants. Dozens came to celebrate with us and it was a blast.

I've done the chartered sailboat before (not sure if it was this exact company tho) and it's a blast! We were allowed to bring food and drinks on board, too.

Ellen curious to hear what you ended up deciding to do?

Sorry for the delayed response! We are renting a limo for the day, driving to the wine country for lunch and a few stops, then heading back to the city for a few sights and dinner somewhere called the Beach Chalet. Ever been? Should be a fun time for all!
