Delicious organic oranges for 49 cents a pound ... in Los Altos?

This little produce shop has been around for years as a dingy uninspired place, but a few months ago changed ownership with little fanfare -- too little fanfare: I didn't even realize it had changed ownership until someone mentioned it.

The new ownership really shook things up. It now feels a lot like the Milk Pail market in Mountain View, minus the big crowds and cramped quarters.

Big selection of quality, inexpensive produce. Friendly and helpful staff. Wonderful fresh breads (including authentic fresh pitas). And lots of tasty Israeli & European groceries (drinks, desserts, canned goods).

What a find!

Maybe too much info on this one, but I went back this morning and am even more excited. Got organic plumbs for 59 cents/lb.

Turns out the owner is Felipe Diaz, the former produce manager for the Milk Pail, which explains a lot.

Here's a neat article about him: http://www.latc2.com/wordpress/2008/08/13/fresh-produce-at-half-the-price/

It feels great to support a family-owned business, especially given how great the food and prices are.

Today one woman shopping right next to me just looked over and said, "What is the deal with this place?!," in excited disbelief.

Apparently word is getting out.. the checker said last Sunday the line at his register was 18 people deep.

I stopped by yesterday and it is really an IMG type of find - thanks Roy! I bought bags full of fresh fruits and veggies, a large pumpkin, and several hard-to-find goodies for eastern european cooking.... for 38 bucks!
