Good message but a bit heavy-handed

I liked the message of helping your kids to be self-reliant, instead of hyper-focusing on achievement. However, it was a bit heavy handed and after reading the first half I despaired of ever being a decent parent. THe second half picked up with a bit more practical advice on how to avoid pitfalls.
