Buying bay area fireworks
Reviewed on Jul 2, 2008

In response to question: low key fireworks around cupertino

If like me you grew up buying and setting off fireworks every 4th of July, it's disappointing that essentially all fireworks are illegal in most of the bay area, even sparklers and smoke bombs.

Turns out you can buy "safe & sane" fireworks (basically anything that doesn't fly or make a loud bang) right now (until the 4th) at several stands along El Camino in San Bruno, like at this spot.

I hadn't seen "ground bloom flowers" in about 20 years!

Note the law says you can only light the fireworks in San Bruno or Pacifica, up until the 4th.

Roy, like you, I've always enjoyed setting off my own fireworks. In fact, my dad used to take us to China town in SF and we'd score M-80's in sketchy back alleys. Here in Omaha, believe it or not, "Artillery Shells" (drop in tube, light long wick, and it launches and explodes like a "real" firework) are legal! You'd love it! Firecrackers are also legal, but M-80's and bottle rockets are not, which is lame. But with some planning, an hour drive across the state line into Missouri will get you pretty much anything. It's awesome!

Nice! Brings back good memories (like getting the anonymous letter from some neighbor 20 years ago... "We don't want Roy to have a police record, but if he doesn't stop lighting rockets we'll have no choice but to...")

What can I say, our little kids just had a blast waving their sparklers around... huge smiles all around.
